WinPlusX

Windows 8 introduced a useful menu to provide quick access to many system shortcuts such as the Control Panel, Task Manager, Programs and Features, and much more.
If you are still running a previous version of Microsoft operating system, you haven’t got that option but, in fact, you have a better one.

WinPlusX is a free portable software that mimes exactly the Windows 8/10 menu but also adds an extra feature, which makes it even more appealing. It allows you to add your own entries to the quick access menu.
That way, you can always have your favorite programs at hand. You just press the Win+X keys or right click on the very left of the Windows Start button and run away.

I have installed it on my laptop, which is still running the good old Windows 7, and it worked fine, apart from a small issue which, incidentally, is not ascribable to WinPlusX.

When I press Win+X on my keyboard, WinPlusX menu pops up but so does the Windows Mobility Center. Now, you could disable the latter but, if you prefer not to, you can hit Win+X again after just a split second and the Windows Mobility Center will close, leaving, hopefully, the focus on the WinPlusX menu. I say ‘hopefully’ because that doesn’t always happen. It’s not a problem if you want to select a menu item with your mouse but if, like me, are a keyboard fan then it can be a bit frustrating. Still, it’s a great tool.
